Sportshall Associates are delighted to announce that both 2017 All Rounder Champions Theo Adesina and Emily Tyrell will act as Sportshall Ambassadors for the forthcoming season. The roles are being handed over from previous All Rounder winners Radix Mulawarman and Amber Anning.
Our latest UK Final Under 15 All Rounder Champions will both act as role models at forthcoming Sportshall Schools and UK Championship events, presenting awards and inspiring young athletes to follow in their footsteps. Amber in particular was a huge help across last season – attending a variety of events including Schools, Regional and UK Finals.
Qualifying from the East Regional Final as the All Rounder Champion where he captained the Essex team Theo demonstrated consistently strong performances to edge Charlie Williams (Norfolk) and Harvey Darroch (Merseyside) into second and third place respectively.
Theo opened his competition with a Gold medal performance in the 4 lap (40.2 secs) and followed this up with Silver medal performances in Standing Triple Jump (8m57) and Shot (12m60).
As a member of Thurrock Harriers AC Theo, now competing in the U17 age group continues to compete in Multi-Events and currently sits second in the Power of 10 Long Jump rankings.
Emily progressed to the UK Final as the South West All Rounder Champion accompanying her Devon team after a close Regional Final competition.
Whilst both Theo and Emily go from strength to strength on the Track we look forward to welcoming them at upcoming events to aid us in spurring the next generation on to do their best and ultimately enjoy Athletics!

Report from Workshop on Mental Preparation for Controlling Nerves & getting in the Zone for Performance Workshop held at Basildon Sporting Village Saturday 14th January.
Amanda Wilding, a Psychologist lecturer at Bournemouth University shared her expertise and knowledge on mental preparation for controlling nerves and getting in the zone for performance.
Amanda started the workshop by sharing her experiences with the eight coaches on the different types of athletes she has worked with. She shared her experience across a variety of sports and specifically her experience in coaching athletes in athletics in and out of competition. The group were asked to discuss experiences of nerves, how they help control nerves and do they know where the nerves were coming from.
The workshop guided coaches through the stages of mental success, different types of nerves an athlete has, and effective techniques to assist the athletes with coping with these nerves. Amanda asked the coaches “Does your athlete talk themselves into competition or out of it?” this allowed coaches to share experiences and knowledge.
BE POSITIVE was a key factor when coaching and the group worked through some somatic techniques and pictured below focusing on relaxation.
The top tips to take away from this workshop were:
- Coaches to understand how they and athletes respond to nerves
- Know your and your athletes signature strength
- Provide the right type of support at the right time
“Thank you for organising this course, I really enjoyed today it was very informative”
This workshop session was the first of the “Psychology” series of seminars provided by coaches from the Essex Athletics Network. Our next workshop will be on Nutrition in February at the University of Colchester.

Congratulations to William Adeyeye on winning two individual golds and overall silver at the National Sportshall final in Manchester on 17th April.
Wins in standing triple jump and shot, and third in two lap race left Will one point short of the individual gold medal in the under 15 all rounder competition.
update Sportshall National Finals 17th/18th April 2016
Budding Young Athletes’ from across the UK are set to compete in Manchester’s Regional Indoor Athletics Arena at the Sportshall Athletics UK Finals on the weekend of April 16th & 17th. The most promising young athletes will battle it out to be crowned UK champions at the flagship athletics development event of the year.
Many current members of the GB & NI Athletics Team experienced their first taste of Athletics through Sportshall competition including High Jump UK Junior record holder Morgan Lake who completed her Sportshall career winning the Under 15’s All Rounder competition in 2012. Athletes such as Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Kelly Sotherton and Mark-Lewis-Francis also took part at this event in previous years. Dina Asher Smith also competed in Sportshall and is now amongst a strong generation of young British sprinters.
William Adeyeye (Essex, Thurrock AC) unfortunately couldn’t attend last year after a strong regional performance so will be looking to replicate his dominating display in taking the East Regional under 15 Boys title with particularly impressive performances this year. We will see a new Under 15 girl take the All Rounder title this year after Ellie Hodgson (Hampshire, Southampton AC) bowed out in 2015 after winning two consecutive titles. There are some strong contenders for the girls title with Amber Anning (Sussex, Brighton & Hove AC) amongst those in with a chance after recording the best Vertical Jump this season!
Teams from across the UK will be looking to win titles and after combined Yorkshire & North East Competitions in previous years it was great to see the establishment of separate events for these regions in 2016. It is particularly pleasing to see teams from Merseyside and Leicestershire & Rutland qualifying for a place in the UK Final. Both these teams have not previously been represented at the UK Final for many years.
Sportshall as a programme was created 40 years ago and now engages over a million children in athletics each year through club and school games programmes. The event is supported by Eveque Leisure Equipment, Eastlands Trust, the Amateur Athletic Association, British Athletics and all the Home Country Governing Bodies.

Outgoing Essex Athletics Network Activator Tony Benton:
“Just to advise that I’m in the process of handing over all aspects of Network administration to Karl Cadman, the new Network Administrator, so this is probably the last you’ll hear from me for a while, until competitions planning for this Autumn gets under way. Karl will also now be your general point of contact and he has already been working on a long-overdue revamping of our website which hopefully will be launched soon.
I’m also pleased to advise that Hayley Pegg is back on board as the new Network Coaching Cooordinator, so again, any future communications about coach education will in future be from Hayley, not myself.
You won’t be completely rid of me as in addition to concentrating on the Network competitions from now on, I’m replacing Doug Tierney as the Havering AC Network rep.”
